Shloka 8
🌟 Sanskrit:
नियतं कुरु कर्म त्वं कर्म ज्यायो ह्यकर्मणः |
शरीरयात्रापि च ते न प्रसिद्ध्येदकर्मणः || 3.8 ||
🌟 Transliteration:
niyataṁ kuru karma tvaṁ karma jyāyo hy-akarmaṇaḥ |
śarīra-yātrāpi ca te na prasiddhyed-akarmaṇaḥ ||
🌟 Meaning:
You should perform your prescribed duties, for action is better than inaction. Even to maintain your physical body, you cannot remain inactive.
🌟 Explanation:
Krishna directly commands Arjuna to act. He states clearly that engaging in one's prescribed duties (niyataṁ kuru karma) is far superior (jyāyaḥ) to inaction (akarmaṇaḥ). On a very practical level, he points out that without action, even the basic maintenance of the body (śarīra-yātrā) is impossible. This reinforces the idea that running from duty is not a viable spiritual path.
Shloka 9
🌟 Sanskrit:
यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः |
तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर || 3.9 ||
🌟 Transliteration:
yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ |
tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara ||
🌟 Meaning:
Work done as a sacrifice for Vishnu has to be performed, otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage.
🌟 Explanation:
This verse provides the secret to acting without becoming entangled in karma. Krishna explains that any action not performed as a yajña (sacrifice, or for the pleasure of the Divine) causes bondage (karma-bandhanaḥ). Therefore, he advises Arjuna to perform all his actions for that higher purpose (tad-arthaṁ). When one acts with this consciousness, completely free from personal attachment (mukta-saṅgaḥ), the work itself becomes liberating instead of binding.
Today’s Takeaway
Work as worship. Every action you perform, from the mundane to the monumental, can be a sacred offering. When you dedicate your work to a higher purpose, beyond your own personal gain, that very work frees you from the chains of karma. Don't just work—work with the spirit of selfless sacrifice, and you will find liberation in action. 🙏✨
