Daily Bhagavad Gita Inspiration | Day 129 | M-Day Bhagvad Gita Quote | Chapter 8: Akshara Brahma Yoga

Shloka 1Sanskrit:

आब्रह्मभुवनाल्लोकाः पुनरावर्तिनोऽर्जुन |
मामुपेत्य तु कौन्तेय पुनर्जन्म न विद्यते || 8.16 ||

Transliteration:

Ā-brahma-bhuvanāl lokāḥ punar āvartino ’rjuna,
Mām upetya tu kaunteya punar janma na vidyate.

Meaning:

O Arjuna, all the worlds up to the realm of Brahma are subject to return. But having attained Me, O son of Kunti, there is no rebirth.

Explanation:

Even the highest material planets, including Brahma’s world, are temporary. Those who reach them eventually return. Only those who attain Krishna are free from the cycle of birth and death forever.
Shloka 2Sanskrit:

सहस्रयुगपर्यन्तमहर्यद्ब्रह्मणो विदुः |
रात्रिं युगसहस्रान्तां तेऽहोरात्रविदो जनाः || 8.17 ||

Transliteration:

Sahasra-yuga-paryantam ahar yad brahmaṇo viduḥ,
Rātriṁ yuga-sahasrāntāṁ te ’ho-rātra-vido janāḥ.

Meaning:

Those who know the truth about day and night understand that one day of Brahma lasts for a thousand ages (yugas), and his night also lasts for a thousand ages.

Explanation:

Krishna describes the vast time scale of the cosmos. A single day of Brahma equals thousands of human ages. This shows how temporary even the highest material existence is compared to the eternal.
Shloka 3Sanskrit:

अव्यक्ताद्व्यक्तयः सर्वाः प्रभवन्त्यहरागमे |
रात्र्यागमे प्रलीयन्ते तत्रैवाव्यक्तसञ्ज्ञके || 8.18 ||

Transliteration:

Avyaktād vyaktayaḥ sarvāḥ prabhavanty ahar-āgame,
Rātry-āgame pralīyante tatraivāvyakta-sañjñake.

Meaning:

At the coming of Brahma’s day, all living entities become manifest from the unmanifest. At the coming of night, they are merged again into the same unmanifest state.

Explanation:

Creation and dissolution happen repeatedly according to Brahma’s day and night. All beings emerge from the unmanifest and return to it. This cycle continues endlessly until one attains the Supreme.

Mām upetya punar janma duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam,
Nāpnuvanti mahātmānaḥ saṁsiddhiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ.

Meaning:

Having attained Me, the great souls never take birth again in this temporary world of misery. They have reached the highest perfection.

Explanation:

Those who reach Krishna are liberated forever. They do not return to the cycle of birth and death in this impermanent, sorrow-filled world. This is the ultimate success of yoga.
