Shloka 20
🌟 Sanskrit:
कर्मणैव हि संसिद्धिमास्थिता जनकादयः |
लोकसंग्रहमेवापि सम्पश्यन्कर्तुमर्हसि || 3.20 ||
🌟 Transliteration:
karmaṇaiva hi saṁsiddhim āsthitā janakādayaḥ |
loka-saṅgraham evāpi sampaśyan kartum arhasi ||
🌟 Meaning:
Kings such as Janaka attained perfection solely through the performance of their prescribed duties. Therefore, just for the sake of educating the people in general, you should perform your work.
🌟 Explanation:
Krishna provides a powerful historical precedent. He points to great kings like Janaka, who were fully self-realized souls yet continued to perform their worldly duties flawlessly. They did not need to act for their own sake, but they did so for the sake of loka-saṅgraham -literally "holding the people together," or guiding and uplifting society by setting a perfect example. Krishna tells Arjuna that even if he felt he had no personal need to fight, he should do it for this higher purpose.
Shloka 21
🌟 Sanskrit:
यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जनः |
स यत्प्रमाणं कुरुते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते || 3.21 ||
🌟 Transliteration:
yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhas tat tad evetaro janaḥ |
sa yat pramāṇaṁ kurute lokas tad anuvartate ||
🌟 Meaning:
Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues.
🌟 Explanation:
This verse explains the immense responsibility of leadership. A person who is considered great or a leader (śreṣṭhaḥ) has a profound influence on everyone else (itaraḥ janaḥ). Whatever they do, others will imitate. The standards they set (pramāṇam) become the blueprint that the rest of the world follows. Therefore, a leader cannot afford to act whimsically or abandon their duty, as it would lead society astray.
Today’s Takeaway
Lead by example. Whether you are a parent, a manager, a teacher, or simply a friend, you are a leader in some capacity. Your actions create a ripple effect and set the standard for those around you. Live and work in such a way that your conduct inspires others to be their best selves. Upholding your duties with integrity is not just for your own benefit—it is a service to the world. 🌟
