Shloka 1
Sanskrit:
भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च |
अहङ्कार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ॥ ७.४ ॥
Transliteration:
Bhūmir āpo ’nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva cha,
Ahaṅkāra itīyaṁ me bhinnā prakṛitir aṣhṭadhā.
Meaning:
Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, and ego — these eight constitute My separated material energy (Prakriti).
Explanation:
Krishna lists the eight components of His material nature. These are the building blocks of the entire physical and subtle universe. Everything we see around us is part of this divine material energy.
Shloka 2 Sanskrit:
अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् |
जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ ७.५ ॥
Transliteration:
Apareyam itas tv anyāṁ prakṛitiṁ viddhi me parām,
Jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedam dhāryate jagat.
Meaning:
This is My inferior nature. But know that I have a superior energy, O mighty-armed one, which is the living entities (souls) who sustain this entire world.
Explanation:
Krishna distinguishes between two energies: the inferior (material) and the superior (the conscious living souls — jivas). The souls are higher because they bring life and consciousness into the material world. We are part of Krishna’s superior spiritual energy!
Shloka 3 Sanskrit:
एतद्योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणीत्युपधारय |
अहं कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः प्रलयस्तथा ॥ ७.६ ॥
Transliteration:
Etad-yonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇīty upadhāraya,
Ahaṁ kṛitsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayas tathā.
Meaning:
All beings have their source in these two natures. Know that I am the origin as well as the dissolution of the entire universe.
Explanation:
Both material nature and the living souls spring from Krishna. He is the ultimate source from which everything manifests and into which everything dissolves at the end. He is the beginning and the end of all creation!
